Indexing Troubleshooting

Understand why submitted URLs may not be crawled, indexed, or ranked immediately.

Indexing is not instant, even after a successful IndexNow submission or sitemap update. Search engines still decide when to crawl and whether to index a page.

Submission Succeeded but Nothing Changed

A successful submission means the URL notification was accepted. It does not guarantee indexing. Wait, then check Page Indexing and Search Performance.

Common Causes

  • Page blocked by robots.txt.
  • Noindex tag.
  • Canonical points to another URL.
  • Thin or duplicate content.
  • Server errors.
  • Slow or unstable page.
  • Search engine has not crawled the URL yet.

What to Check First

  1. Open the URL in a browser.
  2. Confirm it returns a successful status code.
  3. Check robots.txt.
  4. Check meta robots and canonical tags.
  5. Run Site Audit.
  6. Submit the final URL with IndexNow.

Ranking Takes Longer

Indexing only means a page can appear in search. Ranking depends on relevance, authority, content quality, internal links, and competition.
